Artificial intelligence in education research: a critical analysis and case study
In this presentation, we discuss the role that artificial intelligence can play in the context of educational research. We begin with reviewing the concepts of artificial and machine intelligence and their relation to human intelligence. We argue that artificial intelligence and digital tools can act as cognitive prostheses, that expand and alter our human capabilities in education research, by offering new tools and processes. However, for all its promise, artificial intelligence also introduces new methodological challenges. To support this, we draw from a recent research project applying artificial intelligence in educational practice to enhance human-to-human interaction and translingual communication in the contemporary globalized society. The project explores human-technology interaction as an integral part of the contemporary communicative repertoire where the effective use of digital tools is encouraged to facilitate multimodal meaning-making capacities in our everyday lives. This research project provides an example of using artificial intelligence to organize and execute an educational research project, taking advantage of the capabilities offered by the digital while cognizant of its limitations and methodological constraints.
